Substance Use Treatment: Is Now the Time?

Sep 19, 2025

Deciding to seek support for substance use isn’t always a clear, linear path. For many, the question of when to start treatment is just as complicated as whether to start at all. If you’re wrestling with the idea of getting help, know this: you’re not alone and there’s no single “right” way to move forward.

The decision to begin treatment for substance use is fraught with emotions. Fear, doubt and hope can take turns steering the conversation in your mind, often causing fluctuations in motivation to move forward. Sometimes, the loudest question becomes: Is now really the right time?

Why Timing Feels So Important

It’s natural to want the timing to feel just right. After all, entering a substance use program can significantly shift your weekly routine. It may mean rearranging work schedules, adjusting family responsibilities, or navigating insurance coverage. These are real, valid considerations.

Many people believe they need to feel 100% ready to quit before starting treatment. In reality, ambivalence is a normal part of the process. You can feel unsure and still be ready to start. Readiness doesn’t mean having no fear or doubt, it means being willing to explore something different.

Listening to the Voices Inside

When determining the best time to begin treatment, a variety of internal voices may weigh in, some that promote growth, and some that promote continued stagnation. It’s important to recognize the function of each voice as you contemplate the timing that works best for you.

Most of us will have practical issues to consider such as work schedules, cost, upcoming travel, or commitments. It is important to consider these aspects to ensure that the path is clear as you make the transition into treatment. However, sometimes there’s a more persuasive voice urging you to avoid taking this step using endless rationalizations.

We sometimes refer to this inner voice as the “jealous lover” – a term used to describe the part of us that has an emotional attachment to substances. This voice often whispers things like:

  • “It probably won’t work anyways”
  • “You’re not ready yet.”
  • “You need substances to have deep relationships”
  • “Just wait until things calm down.”
  • “You’ll do it after this next event.”

At first, it sounds like thoughtful planning, but if we look a bit closer, we can see that these ‘considerations’ protect your relationship with the substance and work to keep you stagnant.

You Don’t Have to Be Sure — Just Willing

There is another voice within all of us  that can help guide us through the fear and doubt of the ‘jealous lover’. This is the voice of our inner wisdom; the quiet and hopeful voice that leads toward growth. The most powerful transformations don’t begin with certainty. They begin with a quiet curiosity of what could be, a willingness to try, and for some, a sense of urgency that acting now is important.
